July SAEMS Luncheon Speaker - Summary

Our July speaker was Barton Day from Bryan Cave. The topic was RCRA Permit Avoidance Strategies. He identified various ways to avoid generation of hazardous waste including process modification, material substitution and product reformulation. The second option is to avoid disposal of secondary materials through in-process use. Recycling under RCRA is a complicated issue. Recycled material is a solid waste unless it is specifically excluded. If hazardous waste generation can not be avoided, a RCRA permit can still be avoided by carefully monitoring the accumulation and storage times and looking for opportunities treat the waste in treatment units exempt from RCRA.

For more information, contact Barton Day at bdday@bryancave.com or (602) 364-7403.
